இவர் எழுதிய டார்ஸான் கதைகள் உலகப்பிரசித்தம். டார்ஸான் கதைகள் மட்டுமல்லாது, வேறு பல கதைகளும் எழுதியிருக்கிறார். அப்படி அவர் எழுதிய ஒரு கதையே ’A Princess of Mars’. இது அவரது முதல் நாவல். இந்தக் கதையை எந்தச் சூழலில் பரோஸ் எழுதத் துவங்கினார் என்பதை இப்படம் விவரிக்கிறது.
ஜான் கார்ட்டர் என்பவன் யார்?
அமெரிக்க சிவில் போரில் விர்ஜீனியாவின் சார்பில் பங்கேற்று, பல சாகஸங்களைப் புரிந்த வீரன். போர் முடிந்த பின்னர், ராணுவத்தில் இருந்து விடைபெற்று, ஏதோ ஒரு வெறியில் உலகெங்கும் சுற்றி, பல அதிசயமான தொல்பொருள்களைச் சேகரித்தவன். ஏன் திடீரென்று அப்படி அவன் மாறினான்? அதற்கும் இப்படத்தில் காரணம் இருக்கிறது.
படத்தில், சிறுவயது பரோஸைச் சந்திக்கிறோம். தனது மாமாவான ஜான் கார்ட்டரிடமிருந்து, “நெட். உடனடியாக என்னை வந்து சந்திக்கவும். மிக அவசரம்” என்ற தந்தி கிடைக்கப்பெற்ற பரோஸ், ஜான் கார்ட்டரின் மாளிகைக்கு வர, கார்ட்டர் திடீரென்று இறந்த செய்தி அவனுக்குக் கிடைக்கிறது. கார்ட்டரின் உடல், பங்களாவுக்குப் பின்புறம் உள்ள ஒரு அறையில், கார்ட்டரின் உயில்படி வைக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதாகவும், அதனைப் புதைக்கவோ எரிக்கவோ கூடாது என்று கார்ட்டர் உத்தரவிட்டிருப்பதகவும், அந்த அறையை உள்ளிருந்து மட்டுமே திறக்கமுடியும் என்றும் கார்ட்டரின் உயில் சொல்லியிருப்பதாகவும் தெரிந்துகொள்ளும் பரோஸ், கடுமையான குழப்பத்துக்கு உள்ளாகிறான். அப்போதுதான் கார்ட்டர் எழுதியிருக்கும் குறிப்பேடு அவனது கையில் கிடைக்கிறது. படிக்கத்துவங்குகிறான் பரோஸ்.

ஆண்டு – 1869. தனது வாழ்நாள் லட்சியமான தங்கவேட்டையில் இருக்கும் கார்ட்டரை, அமெரிக்க ராணுவம் சிறைப்பிடிக்கிறது. ராணுவத்தில் உயரிய பதவி ஒன்று அவனுக்காகக் காத்திருப்பதாகவும், அதனை ஏற்றே ஆகவேண்டும் என்றும் கார்ட்டருக்குச் சொல்லப்பட, அங்கிருந்து தப்பித்து, அபாச்சேக்களின் (அபாச்சே இண்டியனின் முன்னோர்கள் அல்ல. மேல் விபரங்களுக்கு எண்பதுகளின் எந்த லயன் காமிக்ஸையும் எடுத்துப் பார்க்கலாம்) பிராந்தியத்தில் உள்ள தங்கக் குகை ஒன்றுக்கு வருகிறான் கார்ட்டர். குகையினுள், வேறொரு மனிதனைச் சந்திக்கிறான். அந்த மனிதன் கார்ட்டரைக் கொல்ல முற்பட, அவனைச் சுட்டுக் கொல்கிறான் கார்ட்டர். இறக்குமுன் அந்த மனிதன் வேறொரு மொழியில் எதையோ முணுமுணுக்க, அவனது கையில் இருக்கும் ஒரு பொருள் கார்ட்டரைக் கவர்கிறது. அதனைப் பிடுங்கிக்கொண்டு அம்மனிதன் சொன்னதைத் திரும்பச் சொல்லும் கார்ட்டர், திடீரென்று மாயமாக மறைந்து, ஒரு மிகப்பெரிய பாலைவனத்தில் தோன்றுகிறான்.
அங்கே, முற்றிலும் வேறுவகையான ஜீவராசிக்களைச் சந்திக்கிறான் கார்ட்டர்.’தார்க்ஸ்’ என்று அவர்கள் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். அதுமட்டுமல்லாது, அவனால் அங்கே பல அடி உயரம் குதிக்க முடிகிறது. அந்த கிரகம், மார்ஸ் என்றும், அங்கே புவியீர்ப்பு விசை மிகக் குறைவாக இருப்பதால், பூமியிலிருந்து சென்றிருக்கும் கார்ட்டரால் அப்படிக் குதிக்க முடிகிறது என்றும் அறியாத அந்த ஜீவராசிக்களின் தலைவன் – டார்ஸ் டார்க்காஸ் என்ற பெயரிலும், ஜெட்டாக் என்ற ‘அரசன்’ என்ற பொருளில் அமைந்த வார்த்தையிலும் அழைக்கப்படுபவன் – கார்ட்டரைச் சிறைபிடித்து, தனது ஊருக்குக் கொண்டு வருகிறான். அங்கே, ’பார்ஸூம்’ என்ற பெயரில் அழைக்கப்படும் மார்ஸ் கிரகத்தில், இவர்களைத் தவிர, இன்னும் இரண்டு வகையான இனங்கள் இருப்பதாகவும், அந்த இரண்டு இனங்களுக்குள்ளும் நடைபெற்றுக்கொண்டிருக்கும் முடிவுறாத போரையும் பற்றித் தெரிந்துகொள்கிறான்.
ஸோதாங்கா (Zodanga) என்ற நகரமும், ஹீலியம்’ என்ற நகரமுமே அந்த இரண்டு நகரங்கள். ஸோதாங்காவின் தலைவனின் பெயர், ஸாப் தான். ஹீலியத்தின் அரசர், டார்டோஸ் மோர்ஸ். இவருக்கு, டேஜா தோரிஸ் என்ற அழகிய இளவரசி உண்டு. இந்த இரண்டு இனங்களுமே மனிதர்களைப்போல் உருவம் கொண்ட இனங்கள். டேஜா தோரிஸை ஒரு சண்டையின்போது சந்திக்கும் கார்ட்டர், அவளது அழகில் மனதைப் பறிகொடுக்கிறான்.
பிறகு என்ன? இந்த இரண்டு இனங்களுக்கும் இடையே நடைபெறும் போரில், தார்க்ஸ்களின் உதவியோடு எப்படி ஹீலியத்தை வெல்லவைக்கிறான் கார்ட்டர் என்பதே கதை.
படத்தில் ஸிஜி நன்றாக இருந்தாலும், படம் பல இடங்களில் நமது பொறுமையைச் சோதிக்கிறது. ஏற்கெனவே பல வடிவங்களில் பார்த்த கதை என்பதால், படத்தின் பல இடங்களில் ஈடுபாடு வரவேயில்லை. மட்டுமல்லாது, பல காட்சிகளில், அவதாரை வேறு நினைவுபடுத்திக்கொண்டே இருந்தது இந்தப் படம் (உண்மையில், இக்கதை எழுதப்பட்டது 1911ல். இதைப்பார்த்துத்தான் கேமரூன் அவதாரின் சில காட்சிகளை வடிவமைத்தார் என்றும் ஒரு விவாதம் இணையத்தில் இருக்கிறது).
இந்த வகை ஸைன்ஸ் ஃபிக்ஷன் படங்களுக்கான டெம்ப்ளேட்டை இப்படமும் தவறாமல் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. அந்நியன் ஒருவன் வேறு கிரகத்துக்கு வருவது, அங்கே கஷ்டத்தில் இருக்கும் இளவரசியைச் சந்திப்பது, அவளுக்கு உதவுவது, லோக்கல் மக்களை உதவிக்கு அழைப்பது ஆகிய டெம்ப்ளேட் காட்சிகள் எக்கச்சக்கம். ஆனால், இக்கதை 1911லேயே எழுதப்பட்டுவிட்டதால், அக்காலத்துக்குப் பொருத்தமான இக்கதையை, 2011ல் படமாக்கி, டார்ச்சரை அனுபவித்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்பது படத்தைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும்போதே நன்றாகப் புரிகிறது.
HBO அல்லது ஸ்டார் மூவிஸில் எப்படியும் இப்படம் இன்னும் ஒரு வருடத்தில் வந்துவிடும். அப்போது இப்படத்தை இலவசமாகப் பார்த்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள். திரையரங்கில் இப்படத்தைப் பார்த்தீர்கள்…. தொலைந்தீர்கள்!
படத்தின் ஆரம்பத்தில் பரோஸ் என்ற இளைஞன் அறிமுகமானவுடனே அது எட்கார் ரைஸ் பரோஸ்தான் என்பது புரிந்துவிட்டது. அவர் எழுதிய இக்கதையைப் பற்றி எனக்குத் தெரியாததாகையால், டார்ஸான் கதாபாத்திரம் இந்த ஜான் கார்ட்டரை வைத்துத்தான் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது என்பதைச் சொல்லப்போகிறார்கள் என்று நினைத்தேன். அதேபோல், படம் துவங்கியதுமே, Cowboys & Aliens போலவே இருக்கிறதே என்றும் தோன்றியது. நல்லவேளையாக, இதில் ஏலியன்கள் வராமல், ஹீரோ ஏலியன்களின் உலகுக்குச் செல்கிறான். மற்றபடி, இப்படத்தில் எந்தப் புதுமையும் இல்லை. ஆரம்பத்தில் இருந்து இறுதிவரை, மொக்கையுணர்வு ஒரே போன்றுதான் இருந்தது.
ஜான் கார்ட்டர் படத்துக்கு ஒரு ஸீக்வெல் வேறு வருகிறது. எல்லோரும் எஸ்கேப் ஆகி விடுங்கள். மாட்டினீர்கள்… தொலைந்தீர்கள் !!

பி.கு – உண்மையில், கதாநாயகியான டெஜா தோரிஸ், கதையில் ஆடைகளே இல்லாமல் வருவதாகத்தான் இருக்கும். ஆனால், படத்தை எடுத்திருப்பது ‘டிஸ்னி’ என்பதால், அதனை மாற்றிவிட்டார்கள். ஆக, அந்த வகையிலும் ஏமாற்றமே மிஞ்சுகிறது. வேண்டுமென்றால், ஜஸ்ட் ‘Dejah Thoris’ என்று கூகிளில் டைப் செய்து இமேஜ் ஸர்ச் செய்து பாருங்கள்.

Carter stands 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) and has close-cropped black hair and steel-grey eyes. Burroughs describes him as immortal. In the opening pages of A Princess of Mars, it is revealed that Carter can remember no childhood, having always been a man of about thirty years old. Many generations have known him as “Uncle Jack,” but he always lived to see them grow old and die, while he remained young.
His character and courtesy exemplify the ideals of the antebellum South. A Virginian, he served as a captain in the American Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. After the war, Carter and his companion Powell, who was also a captain in the civil war, became prospectors looking for tons of gold. Carter and Powell struck it rich by finding gold in Arizona. While hiding from Apaches in a cave, he appears to die; leaving his inanimate body behind, he is mysteriously transported by a form of astral projection to the planet Mars, where he finds himself re-embodied in a form identical to his earthly one. Accustomed to the greater gravity of Earth, he is much stronger and more agile than the natives of Mars due to its lesser gravity.
The film begins with the sudden death of John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), a former American Civil War Confederate Army captain, and arrival of his nephew Edgar Rice Burroughs (Ed) (Daryl Sabara) on his funeral. As per Carter’s instructions, his body is put in a tomb which can only be locked from the inside; his attorney hands over Carter’s personal journal for Ed to read, in the hope of finding clues explaining Carter’s reason of death. In it, Carter tells Ed that he was at a store, asking for supplies in exchange for a nugget of gold, when Colonel Powell (Bryan Cranston) arrested him; Powell, knowing about Carter’s military background, wanted his help in fighting an army. However, Carter escapes with the guards in his pursuit. In an ensuing chase both Carter and Powell find themselves in a cave (The Spider’s Cave) for which Carter had been looking for a long time, as it was considered the place where a large amount of gold was located. A Thern appears in the cave at that moment; Carter kills him and, with the help of his medallion, is unknowingly transported to Barsoom (Mars). On Barsoom, due to his different bone density and planet’s low gravity, Carter is able to jump high and throw powerful punches. There he is captured by the Tharks and their Jeddak (leader) Tars Tarkas.
On other side of Barsoom a battle is going on between Helium and Zodanga. Sab Than (Dominic West), armed with special weapon from Therns, proposes a cease-fire and an end to the war by marrying the Princess of Helium Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). The Princess makes an escape and is saved by Carter. Carter, Dejah and Sola (Samantha Morton) embark on a quest to get to the end of river to find a way for Carter to get back home. There they find the ninth light, a means of utilizing infinite energy, and how the medallion works, but they are attacked by Matai Shang (Mark Strong) and his minions. After the attack, Carter is captured and is taken back with Dejah while Sola is able to escape. Dejah gives Carter his medallion and tells him to go back to Earth. She unwittingly agrees to marry Tal. Carter decides to stay back and is captured by Shang, who tells him the purpose of Therns and how they manipulate the civilizations on different planets. Carter is able to make an escape and he and Sola goes back to the Tharks and ask for their help. There they come to know that Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe), father of Sola and the clan leader, has been overthrown from power by Tal Hajus (Thomas Haden Church. He, along with Carter and Sola, is put on trail in a gladiatorial battle with two vicious oversized apes. After defeating them and killing Hajus, Carter becomes the leader of the Tharks.
The Thark army, with Carter as their leader, charges on Helium and defeats the Zondangian army by killing Sab Than. Carter becomes king of Helium by marrying Dejah. On their first night, Carter decides to stay forever on Mars and throws away his medallion. Seizing this opportunity Shang transports him back to earth, where he is not able to return back without a medallion. Carter then searched for the Therns or their medallions for twenty-five years. Finally, after finding the medallion, he went to Mars again while his body was preserved in the tomb. He made Ed his protector and only he can open the tomb. The film reverts to the present, where Ed runs back to Carter’s tomb and opens it only to find it empty. Unknown to him, he was followed by a Thern. As the Thern prepares to kill Ed, a previously-hidden Carter kills the Thern, then tells Edd that he never found a medallion; instead, he made a scheme to trap a Thern. Carter takes his medallion, whispers the code, and is transported back to Barsoom as the film ends.

இந்த படத்தின் டைரெக்டர் தான் Finding Nemo, Wall-e போன்ற அற்புதமான படங்களை எடுத்தவர் என்றால் நம்ப முடிகிறதா? அனிமேஷன் படங்கள் போல மறுபடி மறுபடி ஒரே சீனை எடுக்க நினைத்தார். அதெல்லாம் அக்ஷன் படத்திற்கு வேலைக்காகாது என்று இவருக்கு எடுத்து சொல்ல டிஸ்னிக்கே பயம். போன வரை போகட்டும் என்று விட்டு விட்டார்கள். ஒரு பெரிய பெயிலியர் படம் என்று தெரிந்தே ரிலீஸ் செய்தார்கள். என்ன.. ஒரு 250 மில்லியன் டிஸ்னிக்கு நஷ்டம்!.. மாட்டினால் தொலைந்தோம்!
